Before your puppy comes home, a few things are worth preparing. Here is what we recommend for the first months — simple, proven essentials that make the start easier.
Crate, pen, bed

Teaches the puppy it has a safe place of its own — invaluable when you are out, travelling or in an emergency.
Tip: For a Miniature American Shepherd choose a crate about 90 cm (36") long — it fits from puppy to adult.

Raised and breathable, hard to chew. Easy on the joints and easy to keep clean.
Tip: About 90 × 60 cm (35 × 23").
Food, bowl, chews

One good food from puppy to adult — no diet switch, which often upsets a young stomach.
Tip: For the first weeks, feed what the puppy ate at the kennel.

Such as hard yak-milk cheese chews. They last long and save shoes and furniture while the teeth change.
Combs and nails

Weekly combing removes loose hair and keeps the undercoat in order.

Essential during shedding season when the undercoat comes out by the handful — it prevents mats.
A quick, calm way to keep nails short. Get the puppy used to it from the first days at home.
Everyday basics

A light collar to start with, with an ID tag and your phone number.
Tip: Puppies grow fast — choose an adjustable one.
A roll in every pocket and on every lead. Picking up after your dog is our duty.

Rubber and rope toys soothe itchy gums and distract from what shouldn't be chewed.
